Portage la Prairie Youth Councillor Tee-Tee Appah has completed her eight-month term in office. The youth councillor role was originally designed to be a bridge between the youth of the community and the municipal government. This would help both parties see what was going on with the other and make informed decisions about events going on in the community. Through various projects and events, Appah has drawn the youth of Portage into a closer relationship with City Hall. While acknowledging that the position involved lots of hard work and at times a lot of effort, she looks back fondly on her time as a member of the council, noting that she learned a lot during her tenure. Portage la Prairie Mayor Irvine Ferris spoke about what it was like to have Appah on City Council.

"Councillor Appah has done an outstanding job as the youth member of council," says Ferris. "She's been very busy. She has done a great job of reaching out to the younger population of Portage and she's also had a few new initiatives that always seem to have really good results."

Appah spoke about the new initiative that she considers most successful.

"Over the course of my term, I successfully put on several youth events," says Appah. "Most notably was the 'Lunch and Learn' which was put on at PCI. It was a program where I had the mayor and Councillor Draycott come to the school and educate students about their roles on council. The program was a bridge in order to help kids in high school understand the importance of municipal politics."

Appah was presented with a plaque by the council to commemorate her time as youth councillor. She notes she isn't sure if she will return to a public service type of position but adds that she sees the value in becoming more familiar with the inner workings of the municipal government.

A new youth councillor will be selected sometime in October.
