It was a busy day today at the PCU Centre in Portage la Prairie as the Portage Cup hockey tournament was underway. Organizing Committee Member Shane Moffat has held the annual tournament for the past 7 years, and says things are going along smoothly again this time around.

"So far everything has gone well, and we haven't had any problems or complaints. Kelly Funk and I have been doing this for about 6 or 7 years now so we've got it pretty much under control. We have lots of parents that volunteer and help out so the tournament has been going along smoothly and there's been lots of great games. Teams from Saskatchewan and northern Manitoba as far as Thompson are here and all in all it's been great for the kids and the parents."

Moffat says not only is this tournament great for the players and parents, it's great for the city as well.

"As far as the economic spin off of this tournament, we figure it brings in about $400,000 or $500,000 between this weekend and next weekend. That's about half a million dollars coming into Portage which is a huge hit for the city. It's also a great opportunity to showcase the PCU Centre for everybody in Manitoba."

The Portage Cup features players in the Squirt, Novice, and Atom age groups this weekend. The Championship games are Sunday.
