Yesterday before 4:00 p.m. grass fires were lit and burned out of control about five miles northwest of Langruth. RM of Lakeview firefighters are still on the scene battling the blaze this morning. Municipality of Westlake Gladstone mayor David Single explains it's a matter of people not obtaining burn permits.

Scene from last night"From what I understood, somebody lit something and it took off and was burning dried grass from last year over top of the water," he says. "It's definitely a problem in the area. The municipality is looking at redoing our fire bylaw."

Single notes Lakeview seems to be the only municipality that already had a bylaw in place before amalgamation, but it still stands for that part of the municipality. He says some residents apparently don't realize that.

Scene from last night"Let's be careful, and don't light fires," Single advises residents. "If it rains this weekend we'll be okay. If it doesn't it could get a lot worse in the next little while. And the police were involved and they were out there, too. So, they know who lit it and everything. We're working on a bylaw, and we want to take our time and do it right."
