The provincial government recently announced plans to overhaul the EMS system, with several rural stations to be consolidated or closed. Reeve Harold Purkess says the Treherne ambulance serves as the primary response centre for people in the RM of Victoria.

"It will definitely have an impact on us and we're definitely not happy with the original announcement," Purkess says. "It's basically 10 miles from Holland to Treherne. If this gets re-aligned in Glenboro as it's been talked about, that makes it about 20 miles. That goes without saying, it looks like it could double our response times, and we don't really think that's acceptable."

Purkess notes municipal officials from the RM of Victoria plan to meet with Midland MLA Blaine Pedersen next week to get more clarity and information on the future of the Treherne EMS station.

"That's the biggest thing right now, is the unknown," adds Purkess. "We're getting a lot of phone calls and questions as to why, and when (the ambulance is closing). And we don't know. We don't know what the time-frame is, but we figure our health facility is in pretty good shape compared to some of the neighbouring communities around us.”

“We just can't understand this decision at all, so hopefully they're able to shed a little light on it for us."
