Will Week in Manitoba begins today in Manitoba, and the Community Foundation of Portage and District is heavily involved.

Executive Director Mary Lynn Moffatt explains Will Week's important because making a will is something you shouldn't leave until later in life.

"You need to be planning as you go through life," she says, "Things do change, but you can always make those changes, but those aren't in place, it becomes complicated if something does happen. You may not have your wishes fulfilled, if you don't have the paperwork in place."

Moffatt stresses without a will, you could leave your heirs facing significant financial and legal issues.

"And it takes a lot longer to deal with an estate, if those things aren't in place," she says, " Even with the health care directives, if you are incapacitated, (and) you haven't left someone in charge of making decisions for you, others take over, and they may not know what your wishes had been."

She adds a seminar to help you with that is set for Wednesday at 4 pm at Stride Place.

"We have people from Christianson TDS, BDO, and McKenzie's Funeral Chapel to do some general presentation, answer some questions, and probably be able to help you figure out what questions you should be asking your lawyer or your accountant, or things you need to be making sure that you have in place."
