A Portage Teacher takes back what he learned from a Winnipeg conference.

The Historica Association expects Canadian history will be taught in more practical ways from now on at Portage Collegiate.

History teacher Ryan Muirhead was sent back with that condition after attending the annual Historica Teachers' Institute in Winnipeg earlier this month.  He took part in a wide variety of workshops and tours.

The theme of the conference this year was citizenship and accordingly Muirhead was able to tour St. Boniface for the story of Louis Riel, and several other sites related to the Winnipeg General Strike.

While Muirhead was one of only 40 selected from the country, he remains humble, saying he was chosen due to what he believes is a lack of teachers applying.

Muirhead feels not enough teachers take advantage of professional development opportunities and stresses it's important, as otherwise teacher knowledge becomes stagnant.
