The Portage la Prairie Regional Landfill landfill recently released numbers concerning waste management from last year.

Sharilyn Knox, city councillor and chair of the landfill board, says she has learned a lot since her introduction to the board about what it takes to dispose of waste.

She notes that she believes the landfill deserves more recognition from the community.

"I think people aren't necessarily aware of the work that goes into the landfill, and all of the information necessary to make sure that when we are disposing of waste that we're doing it environmentally, safely, and sustainably for the future, the staff out there is fantastic. They work hard to keep the site clean and safe for people coming out there, so I think they definitely deserve a pat on the back for all they do."

Knox mentions a bylaw that citizens should remember when bringing garbage to the landfill.

"You need to tarp your load when you go out there, so you can't just throw things in the back of your truck, drive out there and hope for the best. There is a $60.00 fine if you get to the landfill and your load isn't tarped. So we ask everybody to be cautious of that and make sure they're tarping their load when they get out there."

The landfill operates as a class one facility under the "Environmental Act" and is 12 kilometres north of Portage. Both the RM and city are involved in maintaining the facility as it is a regional landfill.
