A by-election will be taking place later this summer to determine who will fill the role of Ward 3 councillor in the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie.

Outgoing councillor Terry Simpson held the position for 15 years, but has been forced to step aside because of health issues.

"Currently (we're) accepting registration forms for Ward 3 councillor, so that's the first step," explains Andrea McCabe, RM of Portage's senior election official. "And then after they are registered, they can pick up a nomination package that includes nomination papers."

The nomination period runs until 4:30 p.m., June 30, at which time a list of potential candidates will be finalized, while the election is tentatively set for Aug. 4.

McCabe outlines the necessary criteria in order to run for councillor within the rural municipality.

"Candidates (can be) a resident of one ward, but owns land in another ward," she notes. "You can choose to run in any ward that you'd like, as long as you're a resident of the RM of Portage la Prairie."

Nomination packages are available at the RM municipal office at 35 Tupper Street South. Additional information on the upcoming by-election is available at the RM's website.
