The Portage Collegiate Saints junior varsity girls basketball team was taken down 72-21 yesterday at the hands of the Stonewall Rams.

The Saints opened the scoring and got off to a fairly quick start with five straight points coming from Rayley Lilley. However, they weren't able to withstand the pressure put on by the Rams over the course of the game. Head coach Maureen Shwaluk talks about one key factor in the loss.

"We only had eight players out of thirteen," says Shwaluk. "So, once again, five of our players were gone the same as Tuesday night. They (the Saints) are tired, they played a physical team but they worked hard."

Rayley Lilley was the scoring leader for PCI in this one as she ended the game with eight points while hitting two three-point shots. Sage Driedger also was able to put up seven points on the night.

Coach Shwaluk explains what they still have to improve on.

"One thing we do need to work on is taking advantage of making a good shot," says Shwaluk. "They take good shots sometimes but they need to take good shots all the time. We also can work on rebounding, that's a big thing for us."

The Saints will be on a hiatus next week but will be back in action on February 6th against the St. James Jimmies.
