Postal Union shifts to rotating strike in Portage local
Dave McLeod, president of Canadian Union of Postal Workers Local 802, confirmed that the planned full walkout has been changed to a rotating strike beginning tomorrow (Saturday) at 6 a.m. Because the local doesn’t operate over the weekend, the strike action will resume Tuesday. McLeod notes that rotating strikes are rare and that the last time they occurred was around 2011. “Essentially what it does is it allows the mail to keep going through with, you know, minor disruptions for the customer. But it still allows us to kind of keep our strike, our strike going, I guess, kind of still keeps the pressure on the corporation.” He adds that in Portage the local is small, so strike days may be limited. The union will be notified the night before whether they’re on strike the next day, then they will pause and resume the following day. The average customer likely won’t notice major service impacts. McLeod continues that he expects the action to last until the corporation returns to the bargaining table. He says many members are eager to resume work and reconnect with customers.
