RRC Polytech open house draws interest in “learn-at-home” programs at Portage campus
Red River College Polytechnic’s Portage campus opened its doors yesterday afternoon, hosting information sessions at 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. to showcase local training options in health and business, and a few programs on the horizon. Regional Campus Manager Guy Moffat says the goal was simple: help people see what’s available close to home. “We’re just wanting to share some information and let people know about what we have to offer at the Portage campus,” Moffat says. “We are just letting people know about the different health programs that we run, like Health Unit Clerk, Health Care Aide, Bachelor of Nursing, as well as the business programs… and just making people aware of the opportunity that they have to learn at home.” Tours, programs, and a “stay local” approach Attendees toured the facility, including the fitness centre, gymnasium and the Prairie Project Studio, and heard how regional delivery can save commutes to Winnipeg or Brandon. He adds that the campus has also been on the road with sessions in Notre Dame, St. Claude and Treherne to promote health-care training arriving in Treherne this winter. New and returning offerings driven by local demand Moffat notes the college is bringing back Power Engineering in January, responding to employer requests tied to new facilities coming online. He says the team is also exploring pre-employment plumbing, contingent on securing a Red Seal instructor. “If I know that there’s enough interest from the community to run a program, and there’s enough interest from industry to hire the graduates, then we can definitely look at running that programming,” he says. “It’s important that people are talking to our campus and letting us know what’s important to them.” He adds that open houses complement the campus’s “open door” approach: people can drop in for one-on-one help any time, but events like this let visitors learn from each other’s questions. The evening wrapped with tours and Q&A, and a reminder that many career paths now start just down the road.
